The cheer team practices their jump sequence the day before their first competition.

On February 8th the Roosevelt High school was able to begin practicing face to face and kick off their season.
“This year we have a total of twenty returners to the team,” senior Kya Garner-Minnick said. They are Madison Murdock, Jenna Williams, Hailey Grace, Emely Bitner, Emma Parsons, Bella Cappuccuilli, Angel Gibson, Morgan Lyons, Gracie Affholter, Kendyl Stelter, Olivia Amos, Mariah Vargas, Lea Campbell, Keeley Theisen, Reiley Franz, Leela Hall, Alena Vitale, Summer Gregoria, Kenzie Schram and myself.”
Though a majority of the team is returners, all of the girls are stepping onto a completely different playing field this season.
“We have a new division this year with a lot of top dogs including Rochester Adams who won at states last year. On February 13, we competed against them and placed fourth, so I would say they are one of the biggest competitions for us this season,” senior Jenna Williams said.
Despite the effect the pandemic has on the season, the team tries to keep an optimistic view of the season.
“The seniors Madison Murdock, Jenna Williams, Hailey Grace, Emely Bitner, Emma Parsons, and Kya Garner-Minnick have been the most impactful on the team this season. They are pushing us to be the best we can be despite the changes to the season from Covid,” sophomore Kenzie Schram said.
The precautions set by the competition may have played to the team’s advantage.
“The fact that we are able to not have masks on during round three is such an advantage,” Williams said. “The round is mainly tumbling and stunting which is a huge challenge while wearing a mask. Since we practiced with masks on the full time, it made us perform a lot better at the competition.”
The team’s next competition is on February 18 at Lincoln Park and starts at 6:30 PM.
