DECA hosts annual charity hockey game for mental health awareness

On December 6, the You Matter Hockey game, hosted by Wyandotte DECA, will be held at the Yack arena, coordinated by senior DECA students Kylie Sparks and Grace Maslanka.
The match originally started six years ago as a community event, evolved into a fundraiser four years later to support people struggling with mental health.
“We have a lot of charities we fundraise for but we don’t disclose what they are because we care more for the cause not the money,” senior hockey player Aden Jordan said.
The hockey game itself has generated around 5,000 dollars in previous years for the You Matter fundraiser, all profits go to help kids who may not be able to afford certain things and people who may be struggling with mental health.
“We raise money for an organization called Operation Believe, which is a fundraiser right here in our school that helps raise money for kids who may not have enough money to buy things like homecoming tickets or prom dresses or just something we can use to help our own students,” DECA advisor Elissa Cumiskey said.
The entire idea of the fundraiser, besides helping kids in need, is to promote good mental health and spread community awareness to recognize that everyone in this world matters.
“I joined because I wanted to be a part of something bigger, and because it’s a great cause to help kids that may need help,” Maslanka said.
DECA students plan out almost everything themselves from designing and distributing apparel, to organizing other ways to raise funds during the game.
The game will be held at the Yack Arena on Monday, December 6 at 7:20pm.
