This year’s winter Olympics will be held in Beijing, China beginning February 4, 2022, and Team USA has many successful athletes returning in hopes of winning multiple gold medals.
According to USA today, Team USA has its second-largest winter team consisting of 223 members; 92 of those athletes have been to the Olympics in the past, and 39 of them have previously won Olympic medals.
Out of those 39 athletes who have previously won medals, there are many Team USA members to watch closely during these games, including one time gold medal winner Chloe Kim in snowboard.
“Despite being born in 2000, Chloe Kim is arguably the greatest female snowboarder of all time, and could conceivably compete at several more Winter Olympics,” said.
Kim has been competing since she was 14 years old, and according to, she has broken records in women’s halfpipe snowboarding which include being the first woman to ever land back-to-back 1080’s (three full spins).
Figure Skater Nathan Chen is another contender to watch out for due to his success in the Olympics and world championships within the last four years.
“No man has matched Nathan Chen’s resume since the 2018 Winter Games. Chen began a winning streak that included the 2018, 2019 and 2021 world titles,” said.
Chen is also a record-breaking skater and has done things previously considered impossible to the figure skating world.
“[Chen is] the first man to attempt six quadruple jumps in the free skate – and first to land five cleanly. [He won the free-skate] segment with a 215.08. His free skate score was the highest ever in Olympic competition,” said.
Not only is the United State’s predicted to do well in snowboarding and figure skating, Team USA is expected to excel in women’s Ice Hockey as well.
According to, Hillary Knight, a three time medal winner, and some of her teammates Kendall Coyne Schofield, Brianna Decker, Amanda Kessel and Lee Stecklein- all two time medal winners- are expected to score well at the Olympic Games this year.
Knight is another one of Team USA’s athletes that has broken olympic records.
Having been in three olympics already starting in 2006, Knight is the oldest woman to ever compete in the olympics for Team USA at 32 years old, according to
Another USA dominated event in the olympics is the Luge, where athletes lay on a sled and race down a track. Team USA has experienced competitors Summer Britcher and Tucker West in this event, who have competed on the same team in the past.
“In 2012, Britcher and West were part of the relay team that won a gold medal at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Now she comes into her third Olympics as Team USA’s top-ranked singles slider. All three U.S. women are ranked among the top 20,” said.
Overall, this Olympic Games is expected to be very successful for the United States.
“This is an exciting 2022 U.S. Olympic Team – a great mix of returning champions building on remarkable legacies and first-time Olympians eager to show what they can do on the biggest stage in sport,” Rick Adams said in an interview with USA Today.
