This year’s fall play, entitled She Kills Monsters, will be a fully virtual show put on by the RHS drama department, directed by Sam Ramirez, available for viewing December 4-6, 2020.
Sports teams still get to play… the arts students are getting the short end of the stick,” Ramirez said.
The cast will consist of eleven performers. Ramirez describes the play as, “a dra-medy, drama-comedy– about a game of Dungeons and Dragons.”
The play features sisters Agnes and Tilly -who dies in a car accident- wrote a Dungeons and Dragons game that Agnes plays after her death. Ramirez expects to meet three times a week with the cast,
“They don’t even need to necessarily memorize their lines, they can just be reading their script the whole time,” Ramirez said.
He would like to be able to dive into script analysis, subtext, and get into the core of what acting is, as opposed to just performing the play.
Auditions for She Kills Monsters were held on Monday, September 27th. Auditions were online and the full cast list can be found on the Roosevelt Drama Facebook page.
According to the stage manager, senior Grace Harper rehearsals began in early October.
“This year is certainly going to be different, and we’re all hoping for the best. The premiere of the show is still to-be-announced, but everyone I’ve heard from can’t wait,” Harper said.
Like many other departments and arts programs, the Drama Department is facing the question of how they can still perform and raise money for the program in light of the pandemic. Ramirez plans to charge for “admission” in a virtual setting.
“What I would like to do is put a $5 donation– and allow access to a recorded and edited version available to the public,” Ramirez said.
Many questions still remain about how people will be able to view the show, but the performance itself will be completely performed from the students’ own homes.
Ramirez is focusing on making this year’s fall play a success despite the pandemic, and wants to make it special for this year’s senior class.
Due to copyright laws, the show will be only available for viewing over one weekend, December 4-6, 2020.
