Black Friday is different this year, with deals extending all week and even all month as business try to avoid crowds gathering in their stores.

When people think about Black Friday, the first thing that comes to mind is chaos, so many people crowded in lines at stores across America to get good deals; due to COVID restrictions, Black Friday will look very different this year.
“Every year my friends and I would make a big deal out of Black Friday. We would wake up early, grab breakfast, and then get all of our holiday shopping done but we won’t be doing that this year,” RHS alum Brie Martin said.
Like Martin, many shoppers are opting to stay home on Black Friday and instead do their holiday shopping on Cyber Monday. In fact, many stores are encouraging this change.
“‘Social distancing’ has been the term of the year, which means that retailers won’t be encouraging people to flock to their stores this year. While there will be in-store sales, we predict that more retailers will encourage people to do their shopping online.” Blackfriday.com journalist Shannon Flynn said.
Another way that retailers are attempting to prevent Black Friday traffic is by announcing their deals earlier than normal. Many stores started their Black Friday sales as early as late October. For example, Kohl’s has had Black Friday deals on every Friday of November to try and limit the number of customers on the actual date.
“This holiday season is like no other and with holiday shopping starting even earlier, we’re excited to give customers great opportunities all month long,” Kohls chief marketing executive Greg Revell said in a press release.
Many stores are closing their doors on Thanksgiving day to aid in preventing the spread as in normal years, many customers would choose to start their shopping that night. Some of the stores participating in this are Bath & Body Works, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Costco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, GameStop, Home Depot, JCPenney, Kohl’s, and Walmart.
“As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve and bring uncertainty to everyday life, retailers and businesses want to do their part to stop the spread of the virus,” Offers.com, a retail savings website said. “Many have therefore decided to close their doors on Thanksgiving Day in an attempt to prevent crowds from gathering.”
Another reason that some retailers decided to close on Thanksgiving was to give their hard-working employees some well-deserved time off.
“We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones,” Walmart CEO John Furner said in a press release.
Customers seem to be understanding of this closure, as it is keeping them and the frontline retail workers safe.
“I’m thankful that stores are closed on Thanksgiving this year, I think that even though many will still be open on Black Friday, it is still nice to see the businesses taking action to prevent the spread,” Martin said.
Each store has their own plans for social distancing on Black Friday and some have their plans available for reading on their websites for customers who are trying to determine a plan of action to stay safe on this Nationwide shopping day.
